Petra Tjitske Kalshoven (Ph.D. McGill University, 2006) is a social anthropologist at the University of Manchester. Her research focuses on skilled manifestations of human curiosity, simulation, and play as these find expression in different practices, ranging from reenactment, museum practice, or taxidermy to nuclear decommissioning. Having lectured at the University of Manchester for eight years, Kalshoven now lives in West Cumbria for a five-year immersive ethnographic project on Sellafield’s transformation towards ‘environmental remediation’. As a member of the Beam, a University of Manchester research network connecting the social and the nuclear sciences, she pursues her interest in human expertise and the skilled and persuasive ways in which people engage specific materials and landscapes.

Anne is a researcher and practitioner in circular economy, aiming to make better use of materials and products throughout their full lifecycle. She is a research impact fellow and the former programme lead of the £7M Resource Recovery from Waste programme. She is an internationally published researcher and invited speaker on circular economy, governance, renewables and business models. Anne holds various advisory positions on resources, industrial strategy and offshore wind decommissioning with the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Office for National Statistics, the Offshore Wind Innovation Hub, and the Resource Council.
